Notes on place names and their spellings

The detailed maps on this site are copied from an official publication, which shows place names using the Latin (rather than Greek) alphabet spellings which have been in use for decades.  There is an on-going move towards using a Latin alphabet standard European phonetic form of spelling, which the maps do not yet use.  Increasingly the new phonetic spellings are being used, and property descriptions are more and more using them, but you will find that a place name may be in either the old or the new form;  for many places, the old and new forms are identical, such as in the name Limassol.   For other places, the two forms are slightly different; for example, the old form of Paphos is being replaced with the new form, Pafos;  Germasogeia is being replaced by Yermasoyia, the latter new form reflecting more closely the pronunciation of the name.

To add to the confusion, a few of the major towns were given new names many years ago by the British, but the Greek Cypriot names continued and still continue to be used, and are almost always used by the Cypriot population.  These are Lefkosia, renamed Nicosia, Lemesos, renamed Limassol and Ammochostos, renamed Famagusta.

On road signs, place names are displayed in the Greek alphabet and usually also in the Latin alphabet.

So, for example, you may see the name of the capital of Cyprus written as LEFKOSIA, Lefkosia, ΛΕΦΚΩΣΙA, Λεφκοσια, NICOSIA or Nicosia.
